Proper Gander - A Solo Exhibition by Alex Daw

Date: 06-Dec-2010
Capacity: 200

Hang-Up Pictures is delighted to announce details of the second solo show of contemporary artist and maker, Alex Daw. The exhibition will be held in collaboration with Eight  an exclusive members club located on the historic Change Alley in the City of London and M van Fullbroeck Associates.

Entitled 'Proper-Gander' the exhibition explores ways of seeing, looking at and receiving 'culture', visually, audibly or otherwise. Playing with satire, art history and contemporary culture, the exhibition aims to question existing ideas and art forms, as well as commenting on the current trend of daily mega brand, brainwashing propaganda via television, films, advertisements and the internet.

Sick of the generic and often banal gallery experience, Daw is attempting to shift into more site specific venues transforming the luxurious confines of the Eight Club into a subterranean nerve centre housed deep within the city walls. This clandestine den will be home to a plethora of Daw’s artwork from traditional 2-d works on paper and oil paintings, to carved magazines, moving image and performance installation.

Daw utilises many unconventional and original techniques using lines in many of his paintings, obscuring faces and creating a geometric feel. This combined with painted tape creates a strong visual effect, often distorting and blurring the images as it's peeled away in parts revealing the depth and layers of the paintings. Stenciled text gives the work a regimented feel and further nods to that of a revolutionary movement or militant revolt. The more time spent with Daw’s work the more one uncovers the underlying subtext and hidden meanings with figures, motifs and text starting to emerge in the paintings.

“I am attempting a minor revolt, an artistic revolution of sorts. At once creating an unsettling rendition of my own personal fears and dreams as well as attempting to understand art and the role of an artist in contemporary society.”

The private view and artist's reception is at 7pm on 6th December 2010 and promises to be a very special event, this will be a truly unique exhibition.  Space for the opening party is limited please RSVP using the form below of you would like to attend.

Music will be supplied by Rudi Zygadlo. Rudi works with a restricted palette of sounds, layering on live instruments to give the music an added depth. The results are astounding and the live show (complete with electronically twisted live vocals) is truly something to behold.

The exhibition will run until the 24th January 2011. Admission will be free but as it is a members club visitors will be expected to book ahead.
