Once a successful commercial photographer (working with everyone from the Royal Opera House to Rimmel), Scheinmann’s background is much in evidence in his art. Playing with popular iconography and cultural identity, his pieces are a running commentary on modern life: the fancy-dress buskers of Hollywood Boulevard – everyone from Snow White to Storm Troopers – appear marooned in dusty urban wastelands; adult film stars are close-cropped in the style of retro pin-ups; and gigantic, big-star billboards dominate Chinese cities. Scheinmann’s work is in collections worldwide and has appeared at the National Portrait Gallery.
