As we prepare to say goodbye to 2018 and take a walk down memory lane we can't help but feel it's been a special one. Let's have a look at some of 2018's finest moments...

1. 10th Birthday celebrations with Hang-Ten Festival

This year Hang-Up celebrated a major birthday - turning 10 years old. We went big for the celebrations organising a ten-week festival, which included a multimedia group exhibition, exclusive limited releases and a packed events calendar of talks and workshops. Certainly a birthday we'll remember...

2. New releases joining our Hang-Up Editions

2018 also saw us publishing some incredible releases with the likes of Oddly Head, The Connor Brothers and Mark Powell. Needless to say these were very successful and a pleasure to add to our Hang-Up Editions Catalogue.

3. Winning Time-Out Award for favourite culture spot

Winning the TimeOut Love London Award for most loved local culture spot in Dalston and Stoke Newington was a great honour which we couldn't be happier about. Thanks to everyone who voted for us!

4. Protesting Trump's visit with kennardphillipps

On the 13th of July we grabbed our amazing posters curtesy of Hang-Up artist duo kennardphillipps and joined the march against Trump's UK visit. The atmosphere was amazing and of course getting to see some of the signs and placards was a treat.

5. Nina Saunders joined the Hang-Up family

This year we had a very special addition to the Hang-Up family: the critically acclaimed Danish artist, Nina Saunders. Nina transformed our gallery into something out of a fairytale with her melting furniture and surreal creations. Releasing her first ever prints was also a pleasure!

6. Of course we couldn't leave this out of the list... Banksy shreds Girl With Balloon at Sotheby's Auction

Banksy shook the art world this October with his most brazen stunt to date. Shortly after the hammer fell on the sale of an original 'Girl with Balloon ' at an all-time record of over £1m, the piece self-destructed, shredding half the canvas. The piece was then renamed and exhibited at Sotheby's making him the topic of conversation for weeks to come and further increasing the interest in his market.

7. We teamed up with The Connor Brothers and raised over £1,000 for CALM

We are so happy to share that we have raised a little over £1,000 for CALM thorough our #ArtForMentalHealth competition. This was a project we collaborated on with the Connor Brothers and which would be impossible without all the artists who donated their work and all your support 💕 We hope all the winners are happy with their new artworks and we can’t wait to see photos of them in their new homes 🎁 THANK YOU to everyone involved ✨

Our #ArtForMentalHealth competition, which we organised alongside The Connor Brothers to raise funds for CALM, was a great success raising over £1,000 for the important charity. At the same time, it allowed some lucky winners to get their hands on artworks donated by our amazing Hang-Up artists whilst making a small contribution. Thank you to everyone who helped us achieve this!

8. TYPE

TYPE Exhibition Launch at Hang-Up Gallery | London

Introducing a short film to launch Hang-Up Gallery's anticipated exhibition TYPE, a collection of rare and sought-after artworks from some of the most exciting British artists in the contemporary art world: Harland Miller, David Shrigley, The Connor Brothers and Banksy. TYPE displays a rich collection of exclusive and never before seen original paintings, drawings and limited editions by four groundbreaking artists celebrated for their aesthetic, painterly pictures overlaid with witty text and deadpan delivery. Thanks to Hood Society UK for the video!

In our show TYPE we brought together text-based works by some of the best current British artists: Harland Miller, David Shrigley, The Connor Brothers and Banksy. TYPE was a celebration of the dark witty humour the British are know for. As Mike Snelle of The Connor Brothers put it: (...The) dark self-deprecating humour (the British are known for, which) reflects in the art we make. It is also a useful distraction from our inability to draw well." We couldn't have said it better ourselves...

9. Miami

Visiting Miami for one of the most important weeks in the art calendar whilst escaping the British winter was definitely amongst the year's highlights. As our gallery director, Ben, described Miami during Art Week:

"It’s intense and at times overwhelming as there is so much going on it can be hard to know what and where to go first. I rarely use the phrase 'kid in a candy store' but it feels pretty appropriate to describe it as there is just so much everywhere! The vibe is pretty up-beat and there are lots of weird and wonderful things to see, people to look at, private parties, collector dinners, shows, galleries and of course the ocean..."

10. Hang-Ten Launch Party

Hang-Ten party people

Of course Hang-Ten festival came with one big epic launch party - which was a highlight of its own! The night was not only a celebration of our ten successful years, but also of the relationships we have built with our artists, team and followers. A lovely night we will not forget!
