Moving Into and Launching Our New Gallery Launch

Moving into our new gallery space was without a doubt our biggest project of the last few years. It may have not been easy but it was definitely worth it. From finding, designing and building the space from scratch to the actual move it was a challenging but rewarding process. The official launch of the space and first exhibition was one of the year's highlights as we were honoured to have many of our favourite artists create incredible new works for the show and having a night to celebrate the beginning of our next chapter with our artists, clients and friends was just perfect. If you missed the night here's a little recap captured by Stephanie Pochet and Bruno Ramos. Don't forget you will still have a chance to visit in the new year until the end of January.

New Gallery Launch Party Video

Thursday 28th November saw the much anticipated launch of our new gallery space - and what a night it was. Watch the best parts of the night captured by Stephanie Pochet.

We closed our Dalston gallery space with INTROVERSION IMMERSION, Tim Fishlock's second solo show at Hang-Up. The thought-provoking exhibition addressed society's current fragile state through some of Fishlock's strongest and most ambitious work. Vibrant, text-based paintings, large interactive sculptural works and an incredible site-specific installation, it was a feast for the eyes. The very timely exhibition challenged viewers to truly look and think about how we live and was the ideal closing to four amazing years in our previous gallery.

Tea with Andy

Tea with Andy which officially launched Nina Saunders' print and installation depicting a rare photograph of Andy Warhol, was certainly amongst our highlights. It was the perfect Valentine's night, full of drinks, cakes and pink hues! For the night we were inspired by the decor of the infamous Ritz Hotel circa 1975 - where Red Saunders (Nina's husband) snapped the original photograph of the King of Pop. Curated around the installation and in keeping with the Valentine's theme, were works from the likes of Banksy, Harland Miller, Lauren Baker, Delphine Lebourgeois, Jeff Koons and The Connor Brothers. It was a fun and successful night, with the limited edition instantly selling-out on the evening, helping raise funds for the British Heart Foundation as well.

Record-Breaking Auctions

2019 was a strong year for auctions with some very notable results for Hang-Up favourites such as Harland Miller, KAWS, Jeff Koons and Banksy. In March, British-born Harland Miller broke his previous auction records with 'Incurable Romantic Seeks Dirty Filthy Whore', which was sold for £237,500. KAWS completely shattered his records in April with his painting 'The KAWS Album' which reached an impressive £11.3 million at Sotheby's. Jeff Koons reclaimed the title of most expensive living artist in May at Christie's when his sculpture, 'Rabbit', sold for more than $91 million. Lastly, in October, Banksy once again set the art world a frenzy at Sotheby's when his painting, 'Devolved Parliament' smashed its pre-sale estimates, soaring to £9,879,500 million and setting a new world record for him.

Tim Fishlock's Debut at Bonham's Auction with Outstanding Results

Hang-Up artist Tim Fishlock made his debut at Bonhams auction house in September with the two editions 'ZERO FUCKS', and 'POPULISM IS ALL THE RAGE' with both comfortably exceeding their estimates - selling at £1,030 and £850 respectively. Both editions were published by Hang-Up for INTROVERSION IMMERSIONand released just three months prior to the auction at £250! POPULISM IS ALL THE RAGE, Edition of 15, 2019.

Stormzy Headlines Glastonbury Festival in Vest by Banksy

This year's Glastonbury Festival saw British Grime Artist, Stormzy, make history as the first Black British solo artist to headline the festival in its 49-year history. The artist performed his set in a custom-made, stab-proof vest by non other than Banksy. Soon after Stormzy's incredible performance, Banksy took to instagram to reveal he was behind the vest, at which Stormzy appeared surprised himself, commenting he was "absolutely f*cking speechless." He later wrote on Instagram: "Last night I headlined Glastonbury in a stab-proof vest custom made by the greatest, most iconic living artist on planet earth, the one and only BANKSY." It was a powerful statement on Britain's knife crime crisis and the racial inequality in the country's criminal justice system. Without a doubt an iconic moment in British cultural history.

Our team Christmas party

Last but not least our team Christmas party was definitely a 2019 highlight. This year we skipped the fancy dress theme, escaping to the virtual reality world instead. We started at Other World where we enjoyed the ultimate V.R. experience then had Christmas dinner and our annual Secret Santa gift exchange, ending the night at Shoreditch House. The perfect ending to a crazy year.
