I wanted to share three new works by Mark Powell that arrived this week, each drawn on antique maps from Italy, Ireland and New York.
The new pieces are:
- We Said We Would Never Leave — on an antique map of Italy
- May You Live As Long As You Want — on an antique map of Ireland
- The Streets Write the Stories — on an original 1939 map of New York
Mark tends to prefer drawing elderly figures as his subjects. I’ve always loved the way they sit within these old documents and maps - completely entwined with the worn surfaces beneath them.
As Mark says:
“They both have that history and sense of journey. Nothing else would work. There’s no character or sense of history in a child’s face. It’s more optimistic if anything, which can still be seen in an older face, but it has that ambiguity as well.”
We’re also offering subscribers 15% off the collection until the end of this week with the code POWELL15.
As always, all works are framed to order and finished to conservation standards. If you have any questions or would like to reserve a piece, simply reply to this email or message me on WhatsApp.
All my best,
