I am delighted to present you with Harland Miller's prints OUI and ACE, both fresh to the gallery. These works are both rooted in his fascination with the power of language and his signature use of text as art.
OUI is inspired by Miller's time in Paris and his 2021 The French Letter Paintings exhibition. It explores the beauty of a simple yet evocative word. The layered woodcut technique reflects Miller’s playful abstraction and his idea that the word "oui"—with its positive connotations—can be repeatedly embraced, both in meaning and visual form.
ACE, from his 2017 Letter Paintings series, brings a different approach by using short, sharp words or acronyms that echo the simplicity of illuminated letters from medieval manuscripts. With a nod to Pop Art, ACE celebrates the intersection of the sacred and the mundane, transforming everyday words into bold visual statements. Both prints reveal Miller’s skill at marrying minimalism with deeper cultural and emotional resonance.
