Sparking the debate on whether street art should remain on the street and be left to the elements, or not, Banksy's Migrant Child has been restored.
Appearing in 2019 and removed in 2025, Banca Ifis has funded the restoration, under the supervision of Federico Borgogni, who also oversaw the 2021 removal of Banksy’s Aachoo! from a Bristol house. Migrant Child will now be returned to public view in Venice, with Banca Ifis stating that the project is intended to preserve the work and “return it to the people.”
The timing is particularly significant. Its restoration coincides with the opening of the 61st Venice Biennale, placing Migrant Child back into public conversation at a moment when Venice is once again at the centre of the international art world. With curators, collectors, advisors and press gathered in the city, the work’s re-emergence feels especially resonant.
This also comes amid renewed attention around Banksy following the recent appearance of his flag-covered sculpture in London’s Waterloo Place, a suited figure stepping forward while blinded by a billowing flag - Read our full article here. As with so much of Banksy’s public work, it has prompted immediate discussion around politics, preservation, authorship and the role of art in public space.
For collectors, this heightened visibility is a reminder of Banksy’s continued cultural relevance and market strength. We currently have a selection of Banksy works available, including sought-after editions and rare pieces.
