The Minton Scarab

Did you know Magnus Gjoen has released an Art Therapy colouring-in set? Inviting art-lovers to create their own masterpieces to escape the boredom of Coronavirus restrictions the set included three of the artist's most loved prints on fine archival paper, inspired by traditional pieces of Sèvres porcelain. Gjoen also showcased the various interpretations via a digital gallery on his website, allowing for a sense of interaction and togetherness during a time of isolation.

The artists became official ambassadors for CALM in 2019, which allowed them to continue their important work around mental health, male suicide and masculinity. Most notably, the artists auctioned off 12 unique prints, representing the 12 men who take their own lives every day in the UK, and a limited edition print at Bonham's, London. All the editions sold, raising a staggering £80,000 to aid CALM and their life-saving work.

Think outside the canvas

Think outside the canvas

If you’ve found an artist you like but are baulking at the price of an original, consider a print instead. Hang-Up’s Business Development Director, Charlotte Bain, is a huge fan of editions, pointing out that collecting them offers a novice buyer the flexibility that originals can’t.

Perry’s critique of the male dominated financial sector takes the form of a half bull, half bear beast. The irrational animal is surrounded by symbols taken from the names of patterns seen in Japanese Candlestick graphs, supposedly invented by 16th century Japanese rice traders. Speaking of the crash of the financial markets in 2008, Perry said “There seemed to be an idea that the market was guided by a neutral ‘dead hand’ and the market was entirely rational but we found out in the crash that it was just as prone to emotional weather as any human system.”

Don't take it too seriously...

There’s a lot to take in when you start an art collection, but don’t let it overwhelm you. The most important advice we would give is, as always, to have fun and buy what you love. After all, if you like looking at an artwork, the chances are that lots of other people will do too.
