“A lot of the more traditional collectors, people who buy Basquiat and Haring and even Giacometti or Bacon, are also now looking at Banksy as a really serious artist."

Alex Branczik, European Head of Contemporary Art, Sotheby’s

At the end of 2017, Banksy's printers Pictures on Walls announced that it had been taken over by 'anti-venture capitalists' and was having a closing down sale: the last item on offer was a substantially-reworked edition of this print, first seen at the 2006 exhibition LA exhibition Barely Legal. The two versions differ considerably, with an extra figure in the later print (which is sometimes known as Sale Ends Today to avoid confusion).

A canvas version of this piece was placed outside the UK’s Houses of Parliament in 2005 as part of long-running anti-war demo known as the Brian Haw Anti-War Movement. Haw camped in Parliament Square for more than a decade to protest against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When he subsequently died in 2011, Banksy created a tribute on the homepage of his website, portraying a framed photo of the campaigner with a winged, halo-ed loudhailer. CND Soldiers is one of many pieces Bansky created as a response to the UK and US involvement in the war on terror.

This one's based on a well-known photo of George Bush leaving a military jet on his return from the Persian Gulf: the then President went on to give a speech under a controversial ‘mission accomplished’ banner, which may have influenced Banksy's choice of signage in the work. At more than one metre wide, Applause is Banksy’s largest ever print, created for the 2006 LA exhibition Barely Legal. The original print was created by LA maker Modern Multiples, and a subsequent Pictures on Walls edition features a darker sky.

Fill up with petrol on Ash Salon Street, Bethlehem, and you can still wander across the forecourt to Banksy's huge Love Is In The Air (Flower Thrower) mural, which looms unguarded across the garage's far wall. Possibly a response to stabbings by protestors at a gay parade in Jerusalem in 2005, Flower Thrower also provided the cover art for Banksy's book Wall and Piece and has become one of the artist's most iconic works. Needless to say, this is one of the artist's most valuable editions, with unsigned prints recently reaching more than £160,000 at auction on three occasions.

This image made its debut as a multiple created for Brighton's Ocean nightclub. Featuring eight monkeys, it was one of a series of works commissioned by the club from the up-and-coming artist in the early 2000s: though most were painted over, Ocean sold Laugh Now at Bonhams in 2008 for around £200,000. Alongside rats, monkeys are trademark Banksy motif, appearing in many of his pieces – from Devolved Parliament to Monkey Queen.
