Exploring the art of collage

This week we celebrate the art of collage with a selection of artworks by some of our favourite artists using the medium in unique ways.

Picasso, Matisse, Hannah Höch, and Richard Hamilton are only a few of the many artists that over the decades have experimented with the art of collage. Today, the technique is thriving and many of the artists on our roster offer their contemporary views on the medium.

From Joe Webb to Derrick Adams and Bonnie and Clyde, browse a collection of captivating originals and limited editions.

“In collage and in writing, every cut is protest, its join is satire”

Derrick Adams

Derrick Adams’ Cultural Collage

Derrick Adams’ Cultural Collage

Derrick Adam's critically admired work spans various media such as painting, photography, sculpture, performance, and video, but it is through collage that his Deconstructivist approach to image-making is best illustrated.

Adams' tendency to layer and collage different materials links the artist to a lineage of pioneers ranging from Hannah Höch and Henri Matisse to Romare Bearden.

Man in Tidal Blue - HC

"Man in Tidal Blue" is part of a series titled Deconstruction Worker comprising a series of collage, painting and multimedia sculpture using pencil, ink, paint, fabric and printed shelf-liner. Inspired by the philosophies of Deconstructionism, the minimal geometric constructions of angular human figures that result are meant to appear to live both in a state of deconstruction and in the process of being built.

In the last decade of his career, Henri Matisse turn to creating with scissors and painted paper. His cut-outs allowed him to fulfill his ambition to make monumental decorations that transcended the confines of easel painting.

"I'm particularly fond of this design. It's based on a handmade collage I created a number of years ago. I like the simplicity of the edit, with the eye peeking out between her fingers...the removed face revealing something deeper and universal within us all" - Joe Webb

kennardphillipps

Artists Cat Phillipps and Peter Kennard first partnered together to create art as a response to the invasion of Iraq. They use digital imagery and paper collages to create impactful satirical images that question both politicians and the media.

When Kennard and Phillipps started, the only way to join different pictures together was using old-school cut-and-paste; they later turned to digital photo collage with the advent of Photoshop.

I collect everything that seems of value or might eventually be needed – doesn't everybody?”

Hannah Höch

Cut with the Kitchen Knife

Cut with the Kitchen Knife

A famous political collage by the German artist Hannah Höch is called "Cut with the Kitchen Knife...", a metaphor for Höch’s careful slicing and dicing often used as a means of expressing political dissent. She drew together newspaper clippings, fashion magazines and photography as she firmly believed that art could be collected from the everyday clutter of modern life.

With its roots in European Dada in the early twentieth century and emerging as a reaction to the First World War, collage allowed artists to interact with existing materials to create unexpected and often shocking ensembles. The term 'collage' was coined by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso to define a new, deconstructive approach to form which, in line with the Cubist method, enabled artists to piece together a picture from dissimilar components.

Swoon – Zahra

Zahra

A unique variant based on the iconic Zahra image, the piece consists of paper collaged onto found wood to form a backing onto which the paper-cut image is applied. Like many of Swoon's images, the piece is adorned with scraps and free-cut paper forms pulled from her travels and studio work.

'Zahra' in the artist's own words

'Zahra' in the artist's own words

Zahra has been a dear friend for many years. Between the times of play, what we really get into is a kind of lifelong collaboration. We’ve worked together on the Heliotrope Foundation, on the creation of a portrait and animation for Alicia Key’s Underdog album, and on the film Street Heroines which Zahra helped produce. She’s a powerful force in the world, and I kind of knew that from the second we met. Not to mention that her beauty is fierce and timeless and that’s just the truth.
This portrait is from her first pregnancy. I was drawn to this moment because it expressed the inward looking strength that gathers around a person who’s incubating a new life inside them. - Swoon
