"I think the best kind of humour is the kind of humour where you don’t quite understand what you’re laughing at – you intuitively know that there’s something there that’s both funny and ‘other’. Everything should be humorous on some level. Every part of our understanding of the world needs to a humorous one." - David Shrigley

Shrigley’s trademark style, which features sloppy handwriting, clumsy execution and dark humour, gained such popularity to even qualify him for an OBE. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to visual arts.

“Because I make work that is image and text, it doesn’t really need any explanation, [...] It diminishes the work to add text to it – it’s self-descriptive" - David Shrigley

Untitled (Ball of Wool)

This witty original work is part of a recent series of drawings created by Shrigley during the UK coronavirus lockdown in Spring 2020 at his seaside home in Devon. The artist commented: "We decamped here from Brighton. And I brought 500 sheets of paper and several bottles of ink. [...] I have a little studio in the house [and] I'm able to do my thing."

Best known for his flat drawings, bursting with absurdity and witty lines of text, David Shrigley first came to prominence producing weekly drawings for the Guardian in the 2000s. He quickly rose to fame with a retrospective held at the Hayward Gallery in 2012 and the following year he was shortlisted for the prestigious Turner Prize. Shrigley even had an artwork commissioned for the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square: Really Good, a 7m-high elongated thumbs up, was installed in central London from 2016 until March 2018.

From famed music collaborations, to spoken word albums, video animations and several books published under his name, there are very few projects the artist hasn't put his creative hands on. Despite the many brilliant works he's been involved in over the years, Shrigley's creations feel as fresh, intriguing and hilarious as ever.
