"The idea of telling as many stories with as few objects as possible fascinates me." - Garcìa de Marina

Meet the artist

Using everyday inanimate objects, photographic artist García de Marina, conjures dream-like imagined scenes that personify his props – to fairytale effect. A firm believer that language can limit the personal interpretation of art, he leaves his works untitled, inviting viewers to ruminate on their meanings and contextualise each piece with unique lived experience. The Spanish artist has exhibited across the world, notably at many international photography festivals.

"Surrealism and conceptual art are the movements I feel particularly passionate about. I love the dream-like idea of being able to tell stories with elements that we touch every day but which aren’t alive." - García de Marina

The photographer names Nancy Fouts as the most important influence on his practice. De Marina wrote to Fouts who then invited him and his family to her London home. The two artists connected instantly and were planning to collaborate.

García de Marina never titles his works. It was a long thought-out decision to leave the dialogue between the artwork and the viewer open and free of subjective influences. Not having a title leaves room for interpretation and reinterpretation, often resulting from cultural differences or the unique experiences of the viewer.

The artist's artistic trajectory started when he participated in a conceptual photography contest in 2011, having bought his first camera only the previous year. After his first exhibition in Gijon, Spain in 2012, he went on to show his work around the globe in dozens of galleries and photographic festivals, culminating in a museum show in Petersburg in summer 2021.

What do you and the viewers gain from not giving your works a title? Was this always a conscious decision?

"Not having a title leaves room for interpretation and reinterpretation. Showing my work in different countries has made me realise that I’m using a universal language. But more complex interpretations of the work often result from cultural differences or the unique experiences of the viewer. The meaning of an image can be strongly influenced by the time in history, the place in the world, or the social context where it’s being viewed. The meaning can completely change depending on those circumstances – that’s something that really interests me."

The work of the surrealists Man Ray, Giorgio de Chirico, Dalí, Magritte, Joan Brossa were big influences on de Marina. However, it is in Hang-Up's artist Nancy Fouts that he recognises his main source of inspiration. The two even met at Fouts' house in London and immediately connected.
