“I like the idea of my art being a covetable object; I like preciousness. A lot of art seems to flaunt its throw-away character... But you have to sail out into the dangerous sea of fine art with these crafted works.”

Exhibited at the RA Summer Show 2018, the etching shows Perry riding a motorbike, with right-on slogans fluttering around him. The artist comments about the work “It’s a reaction to the way that politics has become very fashionable in art. I often want to go: ‘Wow, yes! I really agree with you, thanks for telling us about global warming, I’d never have guessed!’”

Perry’s critique of the male dominated financial sector takes the form of a half bull, half bear beast. The irrational animal is surrounded by symbols taken from the names of patterns seen in Japanese Candlestick graphs, supposedly invented by 16th century Japanese rice traders. Speaking of the crash of the financial markets in 2008, Perry said “There seemed to be an idea that the market was guided by a neutral ‘dead hand’ and the market was entirely rational but we found out in the crash that it was just as prone to emotional weather as any human system.”

Just as with his ceramic pots, Perry's tapestries play with the idea of using an ancient form of art to discuss contemporary issues. His embroidery works take an art form traditionally associated with majestic mansions and images of historical scenes and epic battles and give it a whole new, modern meaning.

“Until we can insert a USB into our ear and download our thoughts, drawing remains the best way of getting visual information on to the page. I draw as a collagist, juxtaposing images and styles of mark-making from many sources. The world I draw is the interior landscape of my personal obsessions and of cultures I have absorbed and adapted, from Latvian folk art to Japanese screens. I lasso thoughts with a pen. I draw a stave church or someone from Hello! Magazine not because I want to replicate how they look, but because of the meaning they bring to the work.”
