Love Conquers Nothing

"Part of the cleverness of Miller’s work is that his art continues working, via mnemonics, when the viewer is not in front of it: it runs through one’s head like music does, and leverages the fact that it is literally legible." - Martin Herbert, 'Laughter and After: Harland Miller's Use of Humor'.

Derrick Adams – Good Luck Charm

"Good Luck Charm is a natural progression of my Floaters series of vividly painted portraits of Black people in various states of rest and play, on inflatable pool floats. The work in this series is intended to connect with people on an emotional level and tap into their lived experiences. Regardless of all the things that are happening in the world, we still find time to connect with each other. More rare than the traditional unicorn we all know, I created the black unicorn as a unique object to bring you good luck."

Derrick Adams interviewed by Juxtapoz

This image made its debut as a multiple created for Brighton's Ocean nightclub. Featuring eight monkeys, it was one of a series of works commissioned by the club from the up-and-coming artist in the early 2000s: though most were painted over, Ocean sold Laugh Now at Bonhams in 2008 for around £200,000. Alongside rats, monkeys are trademark Banksy motif, appearing in many of his pieces – from Devolved Parliament to Monkey Queen.

Drawing from her own experience of a long-distance relationship during the pandemic, in the Sweet Sweet Love series the artist offers an honest and authentic depiction of human emotions in a time of hardship. "I believe the emotions present in the drawings could have been there regardless of the circumstances. Resentment and rage, tenderness and solace are all ingredients to relationships." - Delphine Lebourgeois

Perry’s critique of the male dominated financial sector takes the form of a half bull, half bear beast. The irrational animal is surrounded by symbols taken from the names of patterns seen in Japanese Candlestick graphs, supposedly invented by 16th century Japanese rice traders. Speaking of the crash of the financial markets in 2008, Perry said “There seemed to be an idea that the market was guided by a neutral ‘dead hand’ and the market was entirely rational but we found out in the crash that it was just as prone to emotional weather as any human system.”
