Happy Choppers (AP DN) - Unsigned

The iconic 'Happy Choppers' was created for Banksy's Christmas show 'Santa’s Ghetto' in London, which aimed to draw attention to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The image first appeared in 2002 as a mural in Central London at the Whitecross Street Market. It remains one of the artists most popular images to this day.

The moniker of this print comes from the affectionate nickname for New Orleans. In 2008, Banksy painted the streets of the city with murals as a response to the ineffectual clean-up operation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Gustav was on its way, prompting a mass evacuation of the city – and it was with this backdrop that Nola first appeared on one of its street corners. A subsequent print was followed by special editions and artists’ proofs, of which those with rainbow rain are the most sought after.

The 'Have A Nice Day - Anarchist Book Fair' screen print is one of Banksy's first official print runs published by Pictures on Walls. It was released as a special edition of only sixty-seven signed prints. It is believed that the artist himself kept thirteen of these, and the remainder of the edition has largely been kept stored away.

Choose Your Weapon (Soft Yellow)

Choose Your Weapon (Soft Yellow)

Released amid simmering tensions in the run-up to the London Riots (in which five people died and 205 were injured), Choose Your Weapon first appeared as a street work in Bermondsey, a then notorious part of south-east London. At the time, there was a rising trend for illegal breed status dogs – though Banksy’s own hound is borrowed from the pop artist Keith Haring, suggesting his weapon of choice is of the art variety rather than the canine one.

This rare triptych edition was made by spraying a stencil onto processing film and exposing the image straight onto silkscreen. Produced as part of Banksy's Gross Domestic Product show, it was sold via a lottery system to buyers who had answered the question "does art matter?". The prints were priced at £750 which was deemed way below market value. In order to prevent immediate resale, the pieces were only awarded a certificate of authenticity two years after being sold.

Banksy has a history of upending the traditional imagery of the monarchy through controversial modifications – he’s also portrayed the current queen as both a monkey and possibly Ziggy Stardust (the latter image has never been confirmed as a Banksy).

In 2009, Krispy Kreme closed 299 of its outlets due to unfavourable economic conditions – which may explain the 299 editions of each colourway of this print. The pink version (known as the strawberry edition) came first which, along with its hard-to-reproduce rainbow sprinkles, makes it slightly more valuable than the brown colourway (or chocolate edition). The image can be read as a comment on how the police work as an institution to make its members untouchable in the face of the law.
