The Art of Protest

"We don’t see the work as separate to social and political movements that are confronting established political and economic systems. We see it as part of those movements; the visual arm of protest. We want it to be used by people as a part of their own activism, not just as pictures on the wall to contemplate."

For internationally renowned artist duo kennardphillipps, there is no separation between artistic activity and social and political change.

The collaboration between Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps came to life as a response to the invasion of Iraq. Using digital imagery and paper collage, the artists create impactful satirical images that question both politicians and the media.

On the occasion of the Hang-Ten exhibition, kennardphillipps exclusively created a brilliant collection of explosive, politically charged artworks which focussed on Trump’s UK visit. Their response to the social turmoil in America then still feels perfectly fitting in today’s political climate.

America's Greatest Hits (LP Vinyl and Record Sleeve)

‘America’s Greatest Hits’ looks at the victims of police violence in the US. Listed are those who have been fatally shot by law enforcement officers in the US since 2016. All of the victims recorded on the sleeves and on the album were unarmed and not attacking.

The artists have collaborated with composer Mukul Patel on this release. Patel directs Ambient Information Systems, a London studio creating critical intermedia works.

"The first track on the record uses only audio recordings from police bodycams, from incidents involving police violence against unarmed, non-attacking persons. I began to compose the piece with the intention of using only the absences, the ‘non-events’ in between the actions, as a way of pointing to the ultimate absence (of shooting victims). Later in the process, I decided to incorporate some dialogue (because it revealed typical stress levels of the police officer, and the often innocent remarks of the ‘civilian’). The blank portion of the vinyl has been left available for future sonic elegies and protests." - Mukul Patel

In 2015, Hang-Up has had the opportunity to exclusively launch ‘Shove’ – a limited edition based on the artists' large installation at Banksy’s Dismaland.

It wasn't the first time street artist Banksy showed his admiration for Peter Kennard and Cat Phillipps' political work. In 2006 the iconic Photo Op was included in Banksy's Santa’s Ghetto installation on Oxford Street, London.

Since then, the image has been shown at Tate Britain and in numerous other exhibitions. It has been featured, among the others, in the Times, the Guardian and the Independent, and it has been acquired by the National Galleries Scotland, the V&A and the Imperial War Museum for their collections.

The Guardian wrote; "The Tony Blair 'selfie' Photo Op will have a place in history. [...] If an iconic picture is one that speaks to our feelings, this anti-war montage is an icon of our time."
