Swoon has community at the heart of her practice.

Widely known as the first woman to gain large-scale recognition in the male-dominated world of street art, she is also celebrated for her community-based projects, such as creating a tile workshop in the post-industrial town of Braddock, Pennsylvania and building earthquake-safe structures in Haiti.

Swoon has been working with communities affected by the earthquake in Haiti since it struck the country in 2010.

She created Konbit Shelter, a project set up with the mission of helping locals rebuild sustainable bamboo homes as well as a community centre in the village of Cormiers.

"At first we thought we would build one building, maybe two, and just be a part of the immediate rebuilding work - but it soon became clear that this village was a special place, and that a deeper relationship was forming." -

"In 2013 we started working on some after school programming in the community centre for the kids in the village, and that's the genesis of this portrait. Edline, about 12 at the time, participated in a shadow puppet play, with the sun as her character, and the rest of the imagery grew outward from there.”

Here I unearthed, perhaps for the first time, a special magnetism contained for me within the faces of women. I also uncovered a tendency for my drawings of women to blossom outward into a form resembling a goddess.

Emerging from an unstable childhood herself, Swoon has always been very sensitive to issues related to substance abuse.

In 2015, in collaboration with Mural Arts’ Restorative Justice program and Jessica Radovich, a mental health counsellor and yoga instructor, the artist planned a series of classes and therapy courses at the Graterford SCI, Interim House with the aim of helping individuals dealing with trauma related to addiction.

A linoleum block print with hand-painted acrylic gouache on wood, Yaya is one of the several portraits created to adorn public spaces as part of the project "5 Stories".

Swoon (aka Caledonia Curry) is an American contemporary artist known for her large-scale installations and intricate portrait pieces which bridge boundaries between the street and gallery. It’s this pioneering work, coupled with her relentless campaigning on climate change and social crises, that’s made her an obvious choice to feature in our current Game Changers exhibition: find out more here. In honour of the show, we asked the artist to take time out of her very busy schedule to tell us more about her inspiration, methods, and plans for the future…
