Acclaimed street artist Swoon started pasting life-size portraits of friends, neighbours and family members on New York City's walls in unexpected places in the late '90s.
Since then, her work travelled far beyond the confines of the Big Apple, being exhibited in numerous museums and galleries around the world.

Swoon – Yaya "Dawn and Gemma" Variant 0 (Turquoise Torn Edges)
The original iteration of the portrait of the breastfeeding mother was an 18-foot high structure the visitors could sit inside. Entitled Submerged Motherlands, the monumental site-specific structure was installed at the Brooklyn Museum in 2014.
During the same year, Swoon was also invited to participate in Wynwood Walls’ Art of Collaboration program where she created an intricate wheat-pasted mural that prominently featured the image of Dawn and Gemma.

Swoon (aka Caledonia Curry) is an American contemporary artist known for her large-scale installations and intricate portrait pieces which bridge boundaries between the street and gallery. It’s this pioneering work, coupled with her relentless campaigning on climate change and social crises, that’s made her an obvious choice to feature in our current Game Changers exhibition: find out more here.
