‘I once made a slingshot out of Jesus and had his head worn like a necklace. Someone stole it. That was a nice compliment’

On the occasion of what would have been the artist's 77th birthday, we celebrate the life of Nancy Fouts by looking back, with admiration, on her life and career.

Fouts has been a long-standing favourite at Hang-Up Gallery and we had the privilege to host a retrospective in February 2020. Entitled Fags, Birds and a couple of Guns the show was an instant hit.

Before moving on to work as a full time artist, Nancy Fouts led a brilliant career in advertising and her designs has also been featured on album covers. In 1976, the record sleeve for Steeleye Span’s Commoners Crown, featuring her artwork, won the award for Best Designed British Album Sleeve.

“I love ideas, it’s all about ideas, not style or technique, but ideas.”

In her wickedly funny and surreal taxidermy sculptures, Nancy Fouts brought together instantly recognisable objects and juxtaposed them in unexpected situations by playing around with context and challenging preconceptions. The effect of surprise and humour is always present in her work.

Fouts and Banksy think alike. They share the same comedic values, although Fouts’ work is less political. About the world’s most famous street artist, she added, “Banksy sent me an email saying he loved my work. The only difference between Banksy and me is that he can afford to buy my work, but I can’t afford...his.”

Sent to a London finishing school in her late teens, Fouts quickly bucked the trend for genteel debutantes, studying at the Chelsea College of Art and Royal Academy while simultaneously painting the shopfronts of Swinging London, before going on to design record sleeves for the likes of Manfred Mann. After a highly successful career as an advertising model maker, Fouts turned her attention to her particular brand of modern surrealism full-time (punctuating her work with infamous parties). Universally loved by everyone she came into contact with, Fouts was resolutely herself – and her individualism shines through in her arresting sculptures.
