One of the foremost figures in British contemporary art, Bridget Riley turns 92 this month. International demand for her work has been rising steadily in recent years, as more people discover her signature shifting shapes and dazzling illusions.

“Looking is, I feel, a vital aspect of existence. Perception constitutes our awareness of what it is to be human, indeed what it is to be alive”

“Riley might be best known for her early 1960s paintings, but the works, selected with her for the YCBA, reveal her as an artist and thinker of exceptional consequence who continued to innovate and push her practice over decades.”

Gala, 1964
£4,362,000

Selling for far more than its upper estimate of £3,500,000, Gala is a brilliant example of the movement in Riley’s works as well as her shift towards colour in the 1970s.

Gala was previously sold at Sotheby’s in 2009 for £735,650 and last year’s result clearly illustrates the growing enthusiasm for her pieces.
