The barcode itself was introduced in the mid-1970s to aid and encourage the consumerist experience. By using it as a cage from which a creature is depicted as escaping, Banksy suggests a critique of consumerism and commercial capitalism, which puts a price tag on everything including animal and human life.

Barcode belongs to the artist’s celebrated early works and dates back to 2004. The monochrome screen print is among Banksy’s most famous and most sought-after works. There are only 150 Barcode prints signed by the artist.

Napalm uses the depiction of nine-year-old Kim Phuc running from the horror of a Napalm blast, as captured by Nick Ut during the Vietnam War.

Banksy juxtaposes the screaming girl with grinning portrayals of Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse who are leading her away.

This contrast between a suffering child of war and two American icons of consumerism shows Banksy’s critique of the military-industrial complex, linking violent conflict and capitalism.
