23 Dec 2024 | 5 min read

This year has been packed with incredible exhibitions, offering something special for art lovers everywhere. From Paris to Los Angeles, New York to London, 2024 brought us shows that left a lasting impression. Here’s our roundup of some of the best exhibitions from the past year.

Invader – Invader Space Station

11 Rue Béranger, 75003 Paris, France | 17 February – 5 May 2024

Early in 2023, Invader made a much-anticipated return with his first official solo show in a Parisian gallery since 2011. He followed this with an even grander exhibition in Paris, billed as his largest to date: the immersive ‘Invader Space Station.’ This journey into Invader’s universe showcased hundreds of works across various mediums, inviting visitors to explore a cosmic scenography designed by the artist. Held in the former offices of the newspaper Libération, the exhibition transformed the space into a 1.5-hour adventure spread across five floors and 3,500 square meters. Described by Invader as a "mother ship, a starship," it offered an unforgettable and otherworldly experience.

Currently on view at Pace Prints until December 21, 2024, Keith Haring: Black, White, and Red All Over offers a vibrant exploration of the Pop Art icon’s work from 1985 to 1989. Featuring Haring’s signature motifs—radiant babies, barking dogs, and dancing figures—the exhibition bursts with energy in his bold black, white, and red palette. Highlights include rare large-scale prints like Retrospect (1989) and the Anti-Apartheid triptych Untitled 1-3 (1985), reflecting Haring’s engagement with pressing social issues. In a nod to Haring’s iconic Pop Shop, visitors can also purchase exclusive merchandise at the gallery, adding a playful and accessible element to this must-see exhibition.

Basquiat x Banksy

Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC | 29 September 2024 – 26 October 2025

For the first time, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy are exhibited together in the groundbreaking Basquiat × Banksy at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Open since September 29, 2024, the show highlights the parallels between two visionary artists who redefined street art and contemporary culture.

At its heart are Basquiat’s Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump (1982) and Banksy’s Boy and Dog in Stop and Search (2018), creating a dynamic dialogue between their works. This marks the first time either artist has been shown at the Hirshhorn.

Tracey Emin’s solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey took visitors on a journey through love, loss, mortality, and rebirth. Drawing from a transformative personal experience, the show presents new paintings and sculptures that explore her profound emotional states. The centrepiece, I Followed You to the End (2024), captures the anguish of love’s complexities with a solitary figure immersed in red and black. Other works confront themes of mortality and self-preservation. We were truly grateful to experience this powerful exhibition in London, where Emin’s raw and emotional storytelling continues to resonate.

Just down the road at our neighbours, Victoria Miro, Kusama had her fourteenth exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition marked the debut of Infinity Mirrored Room – Beauty Described by a Spherical Heart, which enveloped visitors inside a pulsating, light-filled, hexagonal space.

This work explores the interplay between two key elements in Kusama’s practice: spheres and reflective space. It builds on the concept of the reflected gaze from the mid-1960s and connects to her iconic works Infinity Mirrored Room – Love Forever and Narcissus Garden from 1966. Amongst this were two giant textile sculptures, and a selection of new paintings from Kusama’s ongoing series Every Day I Pray for Love (2021-present). Exploring both microscopic and macroscopic worlds, filled with imagery like eyes, profile faces, and the dots and nets synonymous with Kusama’s style, she blended improvisation with fluid, instinctual forms.

The popularity of Kusama's new sell-out exhibition at Victoria Miro exemplifies the importance of her oeuvre and the demand for her works.
