Saville’s “colour field” paintings are things of wonder; arresting images where bright pigments meld seamlessly into a harmonious jumble in order to create a strong response in the viewer.

Starting her career with monochromatic work, Riley began introducing a controlled palette in the 1970s. Her tones are often inspired by her travels: in the early 1980s, she produced a series with an ‘Egyptian palette’ of terracottas, blues and ochre.

The human body looks different through the eyes of Beard, who divides graphic imagery into bold sections of bright colour in a joyful celebration of sexuality. Drawing on her past as a movie art director, Beard’s saturated works are like intensified stills from erotic cinema.

Penguin books may be the obvious inspiration for Miller’s best-known paintings, but colour also plays a part in their visual impact. Tones complement Miller’s book titles: Hot pink intensifies a message of desire; misty blues evoke the sea at dusk.
