The figure in Mammy (F. & S. II.262) is based on the archetypal character Mammy, drawn from depictions of women in American popular culture. Mammy first appeared in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin and has since become a mythologised symbol within the cultural landscape of the United States.
This work is part of Warhol’s Myths series—a collection of ten screen prints portraying iconic figures from American entertainment. Many of Warhol’s subjects in this series are inspired by 1950s television and classic Hollywood cinema.
