In November 2020, a major solo exhibition entitled 'The Loneliness of the Soul', opened at the Royal Academy of Arts, London and then toured to the Munch Museum in Oslo in the spring of 2021. This was followed by the unveiling of The Mother, a permanent public commission for Oslo’s Museum Island.

This edition is part of a highly regarded group of four paintings depicting Basquiat’s personal heroes and idols. Basquiat takes inspiration from cartoons and comics, and here he depicts the Flash, a popular superhero in the 1960s and 1970s. The original painting that this edition is based on sold for nearly $20 million at Sotheby's in 2021.

The fistfight at the top of the left rectangle of this piece is a stick-figure representation of an actual encounter between two women in a New York nightclub: Basquiat’s girlfriend, Suzanne Mallouk (nicknamed Venus) and his lover, the singer Madonna, who, despite the copyright symbol beside her name, was not yet a celebrity.
