One of Britain’s best-loved artists swapped Yorkshire for Los Angeles back in 1964, and has been painting its swimming pools, palm trees and shopping streets ever since (returning sporadically to render swathes of Yorkshire countryside and magnetic portraits in beguiling oils). The subject of regular retrospectives at London’s best galleries, Hockney has works in many of the world’s major collections thanks to the huge appeal of his paintings, iPad drawings and photography.
Hockney’s extraordinary talent was recognised early on: upon graduation in 1962, he was awarded the Royal Academy of Arts gold medal for his innovative works.
