Henry Geldzahler is best remembered for his tenure at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) in New York, where he served from 1960 to 1977. He was the museum’s first Curator for 20th-Century Art, a bold move at the time for such a traditionally classical institution.
Hockney found in Geldzahler not just a friend, but a brilliant mind and a powerful critic who could offer rare insight.
