"I started out going to Japan, learning from my friend Hajime Kimura whose family makes Bizen ceramics. They have been making ceramics for about a thousand years. I was taken in through an introduction by a friend in Okayama. The colors are very similar to some of the palettes and also the textures of my paintings. I wanted to make tablets that reminded you of something you would find as an artifact from Mesopotamia."
