The dog is one of Keith Haring’s most famous ‘tags’. An iconic symbol that first appeared in his NYC subway drawings between 1980 and 1985 and quickly became a bold, vibrant trademark of his unique visual language.
Symbol of power and authority
While dogs usually stand for loyalty and companionship, some of Haring’s dogs, especially the barking dog, take on a stronger meaning. They represent oppression, abuse of power, and authoritarian control. With its aggressive posture and open mouth, the dog pushes viewers to question authority and challenge the status quo.
Artist Activism
Over time, Haring’s dog also became a symbol of socio-political activism, even inspiring later artists like Banksy to use the image in their own critiques of power.
Modern hieroglyphics
Haring described his art as “modern hieroglyphics” and some believe his dog motifs were inspired by Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god with a dog’s head. By blending ancient symbols with his bold style, Haring created timeless, powerful images that transcended language, class, sexual, and gender distinctions.
Queer representation & AIDS awareness
His dog imagery has also been seen as a symbol of queer resistance and as a way to raise awareness about the 1980s AIDS crisis. Seen especially in works such as “Untitled (Dogs With UFOs)” and “The Blueprint Drawings.”
With all this said, it’s important to remember that Haring’s work invites many interpretations, and the meaning of his dog motif often varies with context. He was genuinely interested in how people made sense of his art and how they engaged with it in their own way.
