The Diverse Techniques of Yayoi Kusama

21 Aug 2025 | 2 min read

Yayoi Kusama, one of the most influential contemporary artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, has developed a diverse body of work spanning multiple mediums. Her practice is united by themes of repetition, infinity, and immersion, yet her methods vary widely, ranging from delicate prints to radical performance art.

Prints

Kusama has embraced printmaking as a way to make her signature motifs, particularly polka dots, biomorphic forms, and nets, widely accessible. She translates her obsessive patterns into two-dimensional works that carry the same hypnotic energy as her larger installations. Prints allow her to not only play with repetition within the composition but also with the works themselves.

Paintings

Painting has been at the heart of Kusama’s practice since her earliest days in Japan. Her iconic “Infinity Nets” series, consisting of endless hand painted loops and dots, embodies her obsessive process and meditative approach. Later works employ vibrant palettes, surreal imagery, and hallucinatory compositions that reflect her psychological experiences and fascination with self obliteration. Each canvas feels both deeply personal and cosmically expansive.

Performance Art

In the 1960s and 70s, Kusama staged provocative performance pieces in New York, merging her art with political and social commentary. Often taking place in public spaces, these happenings involved body painting, nudity, and ritualistic gestures, challenging societal norms around sexuality, war, and identity. These performances positioned Kusama at the intersection of art and activism, while also reinforcing her philosophy of dissolving the self into art.

Sculptures

Kusama’s sculptures often expand her motifs into three dimensions. From her soft, stuffed phallic forms of the 1960s to her large scale biomorphic pumpkins, these works balance playfulness with psychological intensity. Her pumpkin sculptures, in particular, have become iconic, celebrated for their warmth and humor, but also for their grounding repetition and form. Many of her sculptures blur the line between object and environment, inviting viewers to reconsider space and scale.

Installations

Perhaps most famously, Kusama is known for her immersive installations, especially her “Infinity Mirror Rooms.” These environments use mirrors, lights, and repeating motifs to create the illusion of infinite space, enveloping viewers in experiences that oscillate between wonder and disorientation. Her installations transform galleries into cosmic, dreamlike realms where art is not just viewed, but lived.

Through prints, paintings, performance, sculptures, and installations, Yayoi Kusama has consistently pushed the boundaries of artistic practice. Each medium serves as a vehicle for her lifelong exploration of repetition, infinity, and the self’s dissolution into the vastness of the universe. Her ability to shift between intimate works and overwhelming environments ensures her legacy as one of the most versatile and visionary artists of our time.
