Drawing from such disparate sources as history, religion, literature, as well as street and popular culture, Basquiat was able to create deeply personal and layered images. In his 1982 painting, Jawbone of an Ass, he lists several historical figures including Hamilcar, Scipio, Hannibal and Cleopatra, in a collision of words and symbols that proves his encyclopedic and cross-cultural interests.
