Joyce Pensato

With works in both the Whitney and MoMA in New York, Pensato (1941-2019) gained notoriety for paintings which play with well-known cartoon characters, often transforming them into unsettling or macabre alter-egos rendered in aggressive brush strokes and claustrophobic layers of over-painting. The models for these pictures (old soft toys and plastic figures) were found in New York’s thrift stores and transformed into still lifes in her atmospheric studio.
