Andy Warhol’s Details of Renaissance Paintings (Leonardo da Vinci, The Annunciation, 1472) (1984) is part of a series in which Warhol reinterpreted Renaissance masterpieces through a pop art lens. His fascination with iconic imagery was sparked in 1963 when The Mona Lisa was exhibited in New York, generating a media frenzy. Amused by the intense attention on a single portrait, he created Thirty Are Better Than One, repeating Mona Lisa’s face 30 times—an early exploration of mass production and replication, themes he revisited in this series. This screenprint transforms da Vinci’s The Annunciation (1472) into a bold, abstracted composition. Instead of recreating the full scene, Warhol zooms in on key details: Gabriel’s outstretched hand and Mary’s fingers grazing the Bible. Vibrant reds, pinks, and blues replace the original’s muted tones, emphasising Warhol’s signature pop art style. Both captivating and enigmatic, the work exemplifies Warhol’s ability to remix historical art with modern cultural commentary.
