Based on the installation Les Falaises de Trocadéro, which took place in Paris from 17 May to 19 June 2021, these breathtaking images represent arresting examples of the visual illusions the French artist became well known for.
Having created trompe-l’oeil artworks in cities including New York, Florence and Rome, here JR continues to explore the possibilities that optical illusions offer to create new meanings and scenarios in what is, arguably, the biggest icon in Paris.
Maverick French artist JR is a self-styled ‘photograffeur’, papering outsized posters into unauthorised public spaces in an echo of graffiti art. Motivated by reaching people who might not step into a gallery, he began his career with a camera he found on the Paris Metro, photographing residents of housing project Les Bosquets and pasting them across the city.
