Andy Warhol’s celebrity portraits continue to captivate the market, with a string of recent auction results underscoring sustained collector demand and upward momentum for his most iconic works.
At Sotheby’s London on 26 March 2025, a vivid screenprint of Mick Jagger soared past its high estimate to fetch £95,250, while Grace Kelly, a striking portrayal in bold tones, achieved £165,100 against a £120,000 top estimate. Meanwhile, Geronimo, from the Cowboys and Indians series, tripled expectations, selling for £88,900.
In New York, Warhol’s paintings saw even more significant results. Rod Gilbert, a dynamic acrylic and silkscreen on canvas, sold for £242,700 at Christie’s on 15 May, while a rare diptych of Man Ray works achieved £263,464 at Sotheby’s the following day. These exceeded their high estimates by wide margins, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Warhol’s painted portraits.
Further solid results came at Phillips on 17 April: Marilyn (F. & S. 30) hammered for £103,500, well above its £89,000 estimate. The same sale saw Ingrid Bergman With Hat close at £75,275, nearly doubling its forecast.
The market's appetite for Warhol’s blend of glamour, fame, and colour appears undiminished. With both works on canvas and paper achieving robust prices, Warhol’s legacy remains strong as ever.
