Banksy’s Rat Clock, released through his satirical homewares project Gross Domestic Product, is an upcycled office timepiece featuring his iconic rat running endlessly around the clock face. Described as marking “our relentless and steady ticking towards the great unknown,” the piece uses the rat as a symbol of the modern “rat race,” reflecting how people are trapped in cycles of work and time. Emerging from the 2019 Croydon showroom initiative, created partly to protect Banksy’s name from trademarking, the clock blends humour, critique of late capitalism, and references to his earlier rat motifs inspired by Blek le Rat.
