You don’t need to know what phonk is to enjoy these three words. They’re magical without translation.

But seeing as you asked, phonk grew out of the Memphis rap scene. Memphis rap aka Memphis horrorcore – another sublime word – is characterised by its lo-fi sound and minimal synth lines.

Phonk distorts these sounds through techniques such as chopped and screwed. Chopped and screwed involves slowing the tempo of an original song and applying techniques like scratching and skipping beats to create a ‘chopped-up’ version of the song. So now you know.

London-based artist Tim Fishlock creates bright typographic paintings inspired by our love/hate relationship with social media and uneasy alliance with modern technology.
