Banksy Triptych Triumphs at Christie's Elton John Auction

28 Feb 2024 | 2 min read

Sir Elton John has bid adieu to his penthouse Atlanta after concluding his final tour in 2023. As he moves on from this chapter in his life, Christie’s in New York have helped to rehome the star’s impressive collection with a sale of over 900 lots.

The opening night orchestrated a resounding success, and achieved an impressive $8 million. With the results of the further six online sales to be finalised, the collection has already exceeded the original projection of $10 million set by the auction house.

The diverse array of items on sale includes classic photographs, blue-chip artworks, and an opulent collection of jewellery and fashion. A standout highlight has been Banksy’s iconic Flower Thrower Triptych, acquired directly from the elusive artist, leading the sales at a remarkable $1.9 million.

This auction serves as a window into Elton John’s eclectic tastes as a collector while paying homage to the profound impact Atlanta had on his illustrious career.

As sales draw to a close this week, we reflect on some of the highlights:

A spirited bidding war ensued for a neon sign spelling out “Horny?!”, designed as a set piece by the renowned photographer David LaChapelle for John’s wildly successful The Red Piano concert residency in Las Vegas.

On 24th February, the star announced via his Instagram account that the Elton John AIDS Foundation will be providing a further $2.9 million in funding to help tackle the AIDS epidemic in Ukraine.

He writes, "These are people – vulnerable before the start of the war – whose lives have been ripped apart and are now facing crippling barriers to life-saving testing and treatment."
