After more than a year of closure amid the violence that followed 7 October 2023, Banksy’s The Walled Off Hotel has reopened, quietly but defiantly, on the edge of the West Bank barrier. Since its launch in 2017, the hotel has been both an artwork and an invitation: a place where travellers confront “the worst view in the world”, and where the realities of life in the occupied territories come into sharp focus.
The Walled Off Hotel View
The reopening marks a moment of cautious optimism. For manager Wisam Salsaa, the hotel’s return is less about hospitality and more about reactivating a cultural lifeline. Over the years, the The Walled Off has evolved into a vital platform for Palestinian artists, a gallery of resistance and identity shaped by those who live in the shadow of the wall. “Our open doors,” Salsaa notes, “are a symbol of commitment to sharing the stories that must be heard.”
The Walled Off Hotel Timeline
Banksy’s original installations, more than twenty works integrated throughout the hotel, remain intact, from surreal bedroom interventions to relics of conflict reimagined as décor. Room rates still range from hostel-style bunks to the infamous presidential suite, complete with its bullet-pocked water tank fountain.
The Walled Off Hotel Pillow Fight
To reopen now is an act charged with intent. The hotel was built to unsettle, to spark conversation, and to pull international attention toward a landscape often flattened by headlines. In the current climate, that mission feels sharpened rather than dulled. Visitors are returning, albeit navigating stringent travel advisories, and the hotel once again stands as a living artwork in dialogue with a region in flux.
The Walled Off Hotel
The Walled Off Hotel remains independent, politically unaligned yet impossible to separate from the tensions that define its surroundings. It offers no easy narratives, only the insistence that art can frame difficult truths and keep them visible when silence becomes the easier choice.
