Banksy's Work from Home

16 Apr 2020

BanksyWe have all been making adjustments to our daily routines and doing our best to get used to this new reality and it appears Banksy is no different. The artist is not letting lockdown get in the way of his work and has found creative solutions to make the best of a bad situation.

Known for his murals and elaborate art projects on the streets around the world the artist took a new approach in his latest piece, revealed last night via Instagram. An installation of his favourite rats appear to be causing chaos around the bathroom. One rat swings from a towel hook, another marks the days spent in lockdown on the wall with lipstick while a third one urinates in the toilet. The artist geniusly captioned the piece 'my wife hates it when I work from home.'

Rats are of course one of Banksy's most prolific subjects. An anagram of 'art', the rat, is used as a symbolic tool in his criticism of the human race. The rats are often given human characteristics and positioned in unusual or comical situations revealing human flaws, this case being no exception. In his famous book, 'Wall and Piece' Banksy writes:

“Rats exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilisations to their knees. If you are dirty, insignificant and unloved then rats are the ultimate role model.”
