"We've been Banksy-ed" | Banksy Strikes Again | Sotheby's Auction

8 Oct 2018

Friday 5 October will go down in history as the day Sotheby's Auction House got "Banksy-ed". After the hammer fell on the sale of an original 'Girl with Balloon' canvas at an all-time record of over £1m, it self-destructed. Going, going, gone...

Banksy has struck again with, arguably, his most brazen act yet. Last week, Sotheby's London hosted the biggest sale on the art calendar; the evening Contemporary Art Auction. This auction will go down in history, not only for the record-breaking results, but for a £1million canvas self-destructing on site.

Going, going, gone...

Chaos ensued in the auction house. Beginning with a beeping and ending with a half shredded Banksy canvas in a room full of shocked onlookers.

Sotheby's senior director and head of contemporary art, Alex Branczik, said: "It appears we just got Banksy-ed."

Driven by the shock factor, this stunt has generated so many questions. Was Banksy in the room? Did he detonate the devise? How many years has this been in the making? What will he do next..?
