Founding Stuckism

In 1999, Childish co-founded the Stuckism Movement with Charles Thomson. The main focus was to reassert the value of figurative painting, and was a direct backlash against the dominance of conceptual art, particularly the success of the Young British Artists (YBS) in the 1990's.

Rumour has it that the name comes from an insult allegedly made by Tracey Emin toward Billy Childish, saying he was “stuck” in the past.

Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch have clearly influenced Childish's distinct style. A psychological depth, twinned with fluid yet vigorous brushwork, creates a very freeing experience.

His creative influences span into literature in the likes of Charles Bukowski and Beat Poets, and spill into music too. Punk and particularly The Velvet Underground, the Sonics and The Who shaped his approach to music and across his various practices.
