AB Fine Art Foundry

Ben Cotton, our Director and Gallery manager, Carla Nizzola were invited by Oddly Head to visit AB Fine Art Foundry in East London to get a behind the scenes view.

The Casting Process

The complex process begins with a making a mould in wax > attaching sprues > de-waxing > inspecting and firing > casting > fettling > welding and chasing > patinating > finally, wax sealing and fixing. Complicated huh? There are a few more steps to go before the final outcome... Click here to go to AB Fine Arts process glossary to get an in-depth explanation of each stage.Hang-Up's Director, Ben speaks about his visit - "Owner of the foundry Jerry [Hughes], kindly gave Carla and I a guided tour around and it's a truly amazing place. We were lucky enough to witness a number of the processes that went into creating the 99 Problems sculptures including the bronze being melted. The temperature gets up to something like 1200 degrees!" AB Fine Art Foundry specialises in creating metal works for artists such as Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Anish Kapoor, Henry Moore, Jake and Dinos Chapman plus many more!

Did you know this technique of casting in bronze has been around for about 5,000 years?
